BEACHWOOD CAFE 09/09/2022
Philosopheating over breakfast at the famed Harry Styles café.
Apparently cow milk is back and Harry Styles’ star is waning. In an article published over a year ago, Emily Sundburg wrote about whole milks triumphant return, citing that “hot girls want to return to basics” and describing a desire to find what she implied as an indulgent “antidote for languishing.”
Back to basics in an interesting term when referring to food. It tends to feel eerily synonymous with “untouched” and “simple,” which both feel rooted in the obsession with what is perceived as most natural & inherent.
There is and has been a shift from diet practices to a supposed return to what is seemingly tried and true; natural wines, whole grain, and now anti-oils (which are found in many alternative milks. Are oils even actually bad??? We don’t know)
The trend-ification of food! As our identities become increasingly tied to what we consume and as the internet increasingly dictates the correlation between item and identity, food becomes another thing to write essays about, like clothes or music.
The ability to publish our thoughts almost as immediately as we have them has led to these trends cycling with momentum. We’ve reached a level of self awareness that is both only possible with social platforms & one that is brought about from the ever present feeling we are being watched / watching ourselves that social media begets.
Even though we’re living digitally, in a time rendered outside of physical reality, it seems we are more present than ever. Present in the sense that we are honed in on what is happening now, the effects of it in the immediate, as it’s unfolding. Maybe this is due to there being no certain future. It feels like there’s not much to prophesize beyond most certain apocalypse. Maybe that’s why people are so intent on recording their thoughts. Tangible accomplishment feels like a race against time.
